Mormon Trail

Hole in the Rock

ANOTHER OF THE MANY ADVENTURES OF PASS PATROL

In 1992, Campfire Tales was called Trail Scout Report. The TSR was typed on a typewriter and copied.  The cover was made using MS Publisher.  There were no photos because at that time, copiers did not do well with photos..  We added photos to this on-line version  to give it more life.  Those photos are the same trail.  Some were taken at a different time.

THE MORMON TRAIL

Aka: San Juan Mission  aka: HOLE IN THE ROCK

It was great! Everyone in the group agreed this was the BEST trip we have ever done!

It was definitely the most difficult trail Pass Patrol has ever completed.  Although we have crossed more difficult sections of particular trails, (such as Pritchett Canyon and Golden Spike) we have never traveled a trail that was so challenging from beginning to end.  It was the ultimate experience for stock vehicles and modified vehicles alike, with sections for both.

It was more than 100 years ago when a group of Mormons consisting of sixty families began a journey across the Utah desert from Escalante to Bluff.  They expected a six week journey and ended up on the trail for six months.  Along the way they blasted a route across the Colorado River that has since been referred to as “Hole In The Rock.”  That was the easy part.  From then on, must have been pure torture.

Passenger cars can reach Hole In The Rock from the west on a gravel road across a section of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.  From the East, it’s a lot more fun.
