ANOTHER OF THE MANY ADVENTURES OF PASS PATROL

Turret is relatively new as a ghost town.  It was still struggling to survive in the 1940s and a couple die hard families were still clinging to the dream years later.

It started in the 1890s with the discovery of gold and grew to a population of over 300.  Stagecoach service came from Salida.  Turret’s post office handled the mail.  There were lots of saloons and enough gold to keep the town going for several years.

Not much is left today, but the pieces that remain are lots of fun to nose around in.  Several of the buildings still have roofs and one of the graves in the graveyard is surrounded by a picket fence.  The road to it is graded and easy, but it is in a very remote location.

To get there, go to Salida.  From the intersection of Highway 50 and Highway 291, take 291 north across the bridge.  Take the first road right and follow it to the intersection for County 175.  Follow 175 north to 185 and turn left.  Turn left again on 184 and follow the main road to downtown Turret.  The San Isabel National Forest Map is the most accurate for this trip.

HAPPY TRAILS.
